Students participate in the governance of the institution through committees advisory to the Chancellor through the Provost and Vice Chancellor or the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs. Administrative committees are established by the chancellor; ad hoc committees may be appointed at any time for specific purposes.
Membership on administrative committees consists of administrators, faculty/academic staff and students. Where appropriate, classified personnel or citizen members of the community are invited to serve. The number and ratio of members vary from committee to committee. There is a plurality of voting student members of the following committees: University Artists Series Committee, Athletic Committee, Children’s Center Committee, Forum Committee, University Health Committee, International Film Committee, Parking Appeals Board, Recreation Committee, Viennese Ball Committee, and any building committee for construction using student funds.
Eligible student members on administrative committees are recommended by the president of the Student Senate and confirmed by the Student Senate. Students serve annual academic year terms. More information is available at the Student Senate Office, Davies Center 220.
Advisory Committee on Non-Traditional Students
Addresses concerns of non-traditional students and makes recommendations as needed to university administrators, University Senate and Student Senate. Membership includes one non-traditional student from each college.
Advisory Committee on Persons with Disabilities
Provides information and makes recommendations related to the needs and concerns of persons with disabilities. Makes recommendations on the implementation of UW System Policy on Students with Disabilities, The Americans with Disabilities Act, and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Membership includes two students.
Recommends policies for the operation of the Artists Series, including student attendance; participates in the selection of artists for the Artists Series. Membership includes six students.
Formulates and recommends the athletic policy of the university. Membership includes five students.
Provides university administrators and dining services management with feedback and ideas regarding the overall dining services program. A student chairs the committee. Membership includes one student from each residence hall; one representative from United Hall Council; one member of the Student Life Commission.
Chancellor’s Diversity Advisory Committee
Advises the Chancellor on issues related to Equity, Diversity, and Inclusivity. Functions as the university’s Affirmative Action Advisory Committee. Promotes the success of students, faculty, and staff belonging to historically under-represented groups, including but not limited to racial, ethnic, and religious minorities; people with disabilities; gay and lesbian individuals; and women. Identifies strategies to create an equitable campus environment for students and employees and to develop the cultural competence of all members of the campus community. Membership includes two students.
Children’s Center Committee
Makes recommendations regarding the policies, practices and procedures of the Children’s Center. Membership includes seven students, at least three of whom are not parent users.
College of Arts and Sciences - Curriculum Committee
The major standing committee of the College of Arts and Sciences. Has a most significant role in approving courses and programs offered by departments and programs in the college. Membership includes two students.
College of Business - Curriculum Committee
Considers all matters referred to it relating to the undergraduate curriculum of the College of Business; acts on particular proposals and changes within the college that do not affect graduation requirements, and reports these actions to the faculty of the college; makes recommendations to the faculty of the college on curricular matters that affect graduation requirements; and conducts continuous review of all courses, curricula and curriculum matters. Membership includes two students.

Serves as the advisory body on commencement activities.
Commission on the Status of Women
Makes recommendations to the Chancellor regarding issues, policies, and initiatives affecting women, and seeks input from and provides information to those interested in the status of women. Membership includes two students.
Committee for the Teaching and Learning of English as a Second Language
Coordinates the university’s multifaceted efforts to provide ESL instruction and support to non-native speakers of English; oversees the minor in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. Membership includes two students (one ESL, one TESOL).
Competition with the Private Sector Committee
Reviews all major new competitive business activities and ongoing activities whose appropriateness or pricing has been questioned by a member of the private sector or the general public. Membership includes two students.
Counseling Advisory Committee
Provides evaluative feedback concerning the broad range of programming and policies of Counseling Services; develops and recommends new programming and policies for Counseling Services. Membership includes one student.

Firearms Policy Review Committee
Develops standards and guidelines for the review of firearms policies; reviews firearms policies every two years. Membership includes two on-campus and two off-campus student senators, and two United Hall Council representatives.
Recommends policies for the operation of The Forum series, including student attendance; participates in the selection of topics and speakers for Forum programs. Membership includes six students.
Recommends policies concerning book and other instructional resource rental services that support the curriculum and academic programs and assure the integrity of the rental service. Monitors the practices and procedures of the rental service and the requests of instructional staff to ensure support of the curriculum and academic programs. Membership includes five students.

Recommends policies for the operation of the international film program; selects films for the program. Membership includes eight students.

Advise in the planning of new buildings (major projects in excess of $250,000). Membership includes two students for each building.
Non-Resident Tuition Appeals Committee
Hears student petitions of non-resident classification for tuition purposes. Membership includes two students who are residents of Wisconsin.
Parking Appeals Committee
Reviews appeals concerning parking violations. Membership includes five students.
Putnam Park Commission
Recommends policies regarding the utilization of Putnam Park. Membership includes two students.
Advises on matters within the scope of the programs and recreation area; reviews the recreation budget; recommends policy relative to the university recreation program. Membership includes four students.

University Assessment Committee
Oversees and reviews implementation of the university's plan for Assessment of Student Academic Achievement; continues to refine the process of assessment of verbal and quantitative skills; reviews assessment efforts of departments to assure they are consistent with NCA guidelines; reviews institutionally collected assessment data and distributes it to appropriate university constituents; develops, recommends and implements a method of evaluation of the effectiveness of the university's plan for Assessment of Student Academic Achievement, and suggests modifications to the plan. Membership includes one student.
Recommends policy formulation and review concerning the operations, usage, programming and services of the University Centers. Membership includes nine students: the president and vice president of the student body; the directors of the Finance, Student Life and Diversity, Student Services, Organizations and University Activities Commissions; one residence hall representative; and one student member of the Blugold Dining Committee.
University Health Issues Committee
Recommends policies that will ensure delivery of the best possible health care for students within the capabilities of existing resources; recommends wellness educational programs for the university community; recommends AIDS educational programs and information for the university community; recommends charges in the university policy on AIDS; recommends protective practices and procedures relating to blood-borne pathogens. Membership includes six students.

Recommends policies for the production of the annual Viennese Ball, including student attendance; actively participates in the planning and production of the annual Viennese Ball; assists in recruiting campus and community volunteers to participate in production activities; recommends uses of net revenues and donations for awards and scholarships. WUEC-FM Advisory Board
Consults with the director of WUEC–FM radio and provides student and faculty input on the station's operation. Makes recommendations on the station's annual budget and the selection of student staff for the station. Membership includes five students.
