UW-Eau Claire takes first at International Collegiate Business Strategy Competition

A student team from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire College of Business took first place in its division at the 49th Annual International Collegiate Business Strategy Competition (ICBSC), held April 18-20, 2013 in Anaheim, CA. The competition was hosted by California State University, Long Beach.

Members of the UW-Eau Claire team were Amanda Macco, a senior finance and Spanish double major from Howards Grove, WI; Jeremy Schmitt, a senior finance and economics double major from Phillips, WI; Amber Steinert, a senior marketing analytics major from Duluth, MN; Aimee Stolt, a senior accounting major from Plymouth, MN; and Daniel Wolf, a senior operations/materials management major from Appleton, WI.

Twenty-nine teams representing 22 AACSB-accredited universities from the United States, Canada, China and England participated in this year’s event. Universities were divided into six "worlds" or “divisions” consisting of four to six teams that competed against one another. UW-Eau Claire competed in World 2, which also included HEC Montreal (Canada), Ithaca College (New York), Loyola Marymount University (California), and the University of Northern Colorado (Colorado).

The competition was judged by senior business executives who evaluate teams based on their overall financial performance, implementation of their strategic business plan, and the quality of their oral presentation and written documents. See box below of an overview of the competition.

This is the first time UW-Eau Claire participated in the event.

“Coming in first was an extremely impressive accomplishment for our students,” said Matthew Fish, associate lecturer of accounting who along with Dr. Pedro Sottile, assistant professor of finance, were the faculty advisers for the UW-Eau Claire team. “The performance of our students is a testament to the strength of our curriculum, dedication of our students, and effectiveness of our faculty.”

About the ICBSC Competition

The International Collegiate Business Strategy Competition (ICBSC) gives student teams the opportunity to experience what it is like to run a manufacturing company in head-to-head competition in a simulated environment.  Students make key strategic and operational decisions in marketing, finance, and operations over a simulated period of five years.  Teams strive to outperform each other on a number of financial and strategic measures.

The ICBSC has two phases: the remote phase, which began this year on January 23, and the on-site or intensive phase, which was held in Anaheim, CA April 18-20.

During the remote phase, students make up to 80 business decisions per quarter, per week for ten weeks via the Internet. After ten weeks of remote competition, teams travel to California for the on-site or intensive phase where they complete their company’s quarterly decision, write a strategic business plan and create an annual report, and make a formal, oral presentation to judges who serve as the board of directors.
