Lester receives first Tomkovick Teaching Excellence Award

Scott Lester

Dr. Scott Lester receives the first Chuck Tomkovick Management and Marketing Teaching Excellence Award from Maria Bergevin, Tomkovick’s widow.

Dr. Scott Lester, professor of management, is the first recipient of the Chuck Tomkovick University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Management and Marketing Department Teaching Excellence Award. Lester received the award at a special department meeting held, Thursday, August 22, 2013.

Presenting Lester with a plaque and a $500 award was Maria Bergevin, Tomkovick’s widow. Tomkovick, who passed away from cancer in July, personally chose Lester for the award. Future recipients will be selected by a committee consisting of Tomkovick’s colleagues, family members and former students.

Recipients of the new management and marketing teaching award must demonstrate a passion for teaching, connection to alumni and a commitment to servant leadership—all qualities Tomkovick possessed.

“Scott Lester is an individual who is truly dedicated to his students, this department, the university, and the overall community,” said Dr. Kristy Lauver, associate professor of management and chair of the Department of Management and Marketing.

Lester, who teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in human resources management, was instrumental in developing the department’s HR management curriculum, which has been endorsed by Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), an international association of HR professionals. Students in Lester’s courses consistently achieve top scores on the SHRM Assurance of Learning exam, which assesses whether seniors and recent graduates have the minimum knowledge needed to be successful HR practitioners.

In addition, Lester has been recognized for his scholarly activity and community service. An active researcher with numerous awards for papers and publications, Lester was the 2010 recipient of the UW-Eau Claire Excellence in Scholarship Award. He was recently presented with the 2013 Sister Joel Read Civic Engagement Practitioners Award by the Wisconsin Civic Engagement Institute for the service he and the students in his community leadership course have provided to the Eau Claire community. Since Lester first taught this course in 2007, 225 UW-Eau Claire students have completed 60 service projects that helped 45 different Eau Claire area nonprofit organizations.

Gifts to the Dr. Chuck Tomkovick Fund can be made through the UW-Eau Claire Foundation. For more information, go to www.uwec.edu/Foundation/what/faculty/Tomkovick.htm.
