About Interlibrary Loan
>>Place Requests Online<<
Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a service provided to faculty, students, and emeriti to supplement the Library's collection. Faculty, students, and emeriti may submit requests up to 4 per week. We realize faculty will sometimes batch requests and this is permissible. However, requests should be prioritized so the most important or most urgently needed requests are processed first. Essentially the limit of four means a minimum of four requests will be sent each week, more if time allows. Community borrowers will be referred to their local public library except for U.S. government publications.
Office Hours: 9:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m., Monday - Friday
What May Be Requested:
Books, photocopies of journal articles and some dissertations.
What May Not Be Requested:
- Entire issues of journals
- Items for group projects
- Items to be placed on reserve
- Most audio visual materials
- Items owned by McIntyre Library. If an item in our collection is in use, a hold or recall may be requested at the Circulation Desk. You will be notified when the item is available for your use.
- Dissertations are not always available. Consult the ILL staff for possible exceptions.
- Items owned by Eau Claire libraries. Exceptions will be made for handicapped individuals.
Procedures for Requesting Materials:
- Log in to Illiad and choose either "Request a book" or "Request a photocopy".
- Complete the sections pertinent to the type of material being requested.
- Provide complete citations. It is essential to provide the full journal title rather than an abbreviation.
- Include the source of the citations whenever possible.
- Please include the ISSN number (International Standard Serial Number) for journals. This number is not mandatory, but is useful for speedy processing
We can no longer accept ILL requests on paper forms; please place all requests online.
Procedures for Distribution of Materials:
Photocopies: Sent to faculty, academic staff and on-campus students via campus mail on the day they are received. Off-campus students must pick up their photocopies at the Main Circulation Desk.
Other Materials: Faculty are notified via e-mail of the arrival of books or other materials which must be picked up at the Main Circulation Desk.
Date Due Slips: Leave the date due slips in the materials and return the borrowed items to the Main Circulation Desk any time the Library is open.
Potential Problems:
- Incorrect, incomplete, or abbreviated journal titles. Consult the front of the index for the compete journal title or ask at the Reference Desk.
- Incomplete citations. Pay particular attention to the volume (month), date (year), and page numbers of the journal as well as the author and title of the article. This information is essential for retrieval.
- No source for the citation. Occasionally the library needs to verify a citation and if the original source of the citation (e.g. index, bibliography, etc.) can be consulted, the questions can be answered immediately causing no delay in filling the request.
- Failure to check McIntyre Library's holdings. You must check the online catalog for books, government documents, journals, newspapers, and magazines prior to submitting ILL requests.
- Turnaround time. Remember to allow adequate time when ordering ILL materials. Remind your students to request materials as early in the semester as possible. Two weeks is usually sufficient; but during rush periods (mid semester, etc.) this period is lengthened.
- ILL is intended to supplement the Library's collection, not replace it. Most undergraduate research can be supported by materials in the McIntyre Library collection. Reference librarians are happy to assist students and faculty in identifying comparable information sources available locally.
Service Charges:
- Books: A service charge of $5.00 per day can be assessed for each interloan book not returned by the date due.
- Periodicals: A service charge of $4.00 per request will be assessed for photocopies NOT picked up by the end of the semester.
