Long currently serves as interim dean of Adult Education and Training at North Hennepin Community College in Minneapolis. Previously he was assistant dean of executive and professional development in the Opus College of Business at the University of St. Thomas.
"The new director will serve as the visionary and administrative leader of UW-Eau Claire Continuing Education as it continues to transition to the entrepreneurial arm of the university," said Dr. Michael Wick, UW-Eau Claire associate vice chancellor for academic affairs and dean of graduate studies. "Dr. Long is well suited to lead the Office of Continuing Education, bringing experience in establishing innovative partnerships and new approaches to meeting the changing lifelong-learning needs of working adults. Dr. Long has a significant record of effectively delivering enterprise-wide professional development opportunities and cultivating institutional leadership."
Long earned a doctorate in higher education and a master's degree in mass communication from the University of Minnesota. He taught in the UW-Eau Claire communication and journalism department from 1983-85.
Increasingly, technological change, globalization and the explosion of new knowledge means that continuing education is essential to success in nearly every career field, and the nation's economic recession has highlighted the need for working adults to refresh their skills and/or retool for new professions, Long said.
"UW-Eau Claire Continuing Education is at the forefront of the university's outreach and service to the local and regional community," Long said. "It is the link to workforce, professional and leadership development and the means by which the university's considerable resources can contribute to economic development and improved quality of life in the Chippewa Valley and western Wisconsin.
"I am pleased to join the very successful UW-Eau Claire Continuing Education team, and I look forward to working with them to serve the individuals and employers in western Wisconsin who understand the value of lifelong learning to their lives, careers and businesses."
UW-Eau Claire Continuing Education, a collaborative partnership between the university and UW-Extension, provides credit and noncredit enrichment and professional development programs for nontraditional learners of all ages. UW-Eau Claire Continuing Education offices are at 210 Water St.
