Summer campus construction to require pedestrian, vehicle route changes

May 1, 2012

Excellence is always under constructionEAU CLAIRE — Multiple major construction projects at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire this summer will require new routes of travel on campus for both pedestrians and vehicles. (See a related news release with more details about summer construction on campus.)

On May 21, installation of construction fencing will begin on lower campus that eventually will close off the entire Central Campus Mall, McIntyre Library courtyard, new Education Building site and future new campus green space to be developed on the site of the old Davies Center. (See a campus construction map showing the location of the construction fencing.)

Once all fencing is installed, the following building doors will be inaccessible: Zorn Arena west and south doors, Phillips Science Hall north doors, all south-facing doors in Schofield Hall and the exterior doors in the corridor linking Schofield Hall and the Old Library. Access from the McIntyre Library east doors to the library courtyard and the sidewalk west of the old Davies Center leading to the Phillips parking lot will be blocked. However, pedestrian travel will be open between the McIntyre Library east doors and the sidewalk under the library.

Beginning May 21, the pedestrian tunnel and breezeway linking Schofield Hall and the old Davies Center will be closed and demolished. Also effective May 21, the only entrance and exit point in the old Davies Center will be the south-facing doors on the east end (with all other doors still available for emergency exit).

Throughout the construction of the university's new Education Building, a project expected to continue until fall 2013, pedestrian access to Schneider and Phillips halls for those traveling east on Garfield Avenue or approaching campus from the Hibbard parking lot will be via the sidewalk on the west side of Park Avenue and the north and west sidewalk along Roosevelt Avenue. Construction fencing configurations will allow entry to and exit from both the east and west entrances of Schneider Hall. Phillips Hall exit and entry will be via the building's east doors on Roosevelt Avenue only.

Beginning May 21 and through the summer, Garfield Avenue will be narrowed to one lane from the campus footbridge to Park Avenue. No vehicle through traffic will be possible on Garfield Avenue for an eight-week period between June 11 and Aug. 24, when Garfield Avenue from Park Avenue to just west of Hibbard Hall must be closed for steam line construction.

During the Garfield Avenue closure, pedestrian traffic on the north Garfield Avenue sidewalk will be maintained via a temporary bridge through the construction area. Vehicles can access Garfield Avenue west of Hibbard Hall via Putnam Drive (accessible via a temporary connector road to be located at the west end of the Phillips parking lot) and via the Garfield Avenue hill connecting upper and lower campus. The campus hill gates will be open during the closure of Garfield Avenue in front of Hibbard Hall.

During the reconstruction of the Haas Fine Arts parking lot June 15-Aug. 31, the Haas Fine Arts Center south-facing doors, doors near the building's loading dock and the loading dock will be closed. The sidewalk along the south side of the Haas Fine Arts Center and Haas Fine Arts parking lot, the extension of Second Avenue to the west of the Haas Fine Arts Center (including sidewalks), the circle drive on the west side of the Haas Fine Arts Center and the sidewalk on the east side of the Human Sciences and Services Building also will be closed.

During the Haas Fine Arts parking lot reconstruction, entry to and exit from the Haas Fine Arts Center will be via the building's north and east doors only. Pedestrian travel to and from the Human Sciences and Services Building will be along the south sidewalk on Water Street. In addition, pedestrians will be able to enter and exit the Human Sciences and Services Building south doors from the west only.
