UW-Eau Claire honors outstanding students

EAU CLAIRE —Student excellence awards recently were presented to outstanding students at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

The awards, sponsored by the Alumni Association, the UW-Eau Claire Foundation and University Centers, highlight the exceptional contributions students have made to the campus or greater community.

Recipients of the special category excellence awards each received a $250 scholarship through the UW-Eau Claire Foundation, thanks to the generosity of many donors. Students who received Outstanding Graduate Student and Outstanding Undergraduate Student awards from UW-Eau Claire's four colleges received a university medallion and a scholarship award.

The following students were honored: Mai Neng Vang, junior, Eau Claire, Excellence in Leadership; Etzel Lopez Ortega, sophomore, Middleton, Excellence in Equity, Diversity and Inclusiveness; Virgil Ward II, junior, Madison, Excellence in Global Awareness; Abigail M. Chilsen, senior, Onalaska, Excellence in Scholarly and Creative Activity; Mary V. Vrieze, junior, Jim Falls, Non-Traditional Student Leadership Award; Cassandra M. Yonash, senior, Stevens Point, Residence Hall Leadership Award; Christopher J. Jorgenson, graduate student, Waupaca, LGBTQA Outstanding Student Leadership Award; Katie L. Johnson, junior, Eau Claire, LGBTQA Outstanding Student Leadership Award; Elsa D. Kraus, Stratford, senior, Giraffe Leadership Award: Sticking One's Neck Out for Social Justice; and Brianne N. Schwarz, senior, Madison, Andre and Joanne Gibault Blugold Spirit Award.

Also honored were Jordyn R. Schemenauer, junior, Marathon, Emerging Leader for the College of Nursing and Health Sciences; Heather R. Buhr, senior, Denmark, Emerging Leader Award for the College of Education and Human Sciences; Kristen A. Hathaway, senior, St. Louis Park, Minn., Emerging Leader Award for the College of Arts and Sciences; Katelyn N. Goettl, junior, North Mankato, Minn., Emerging Leader Award for the College of Business; Tiffany K. Melby, senior, Osseo, Outstanding Undergraduate Student for the College of Education and Human Sciences; Adam C. Schneider, senior, Middleton, Outstanding Undergraduate Student for the College of Arts and Sciences; Rachel R. Nerison, senior, Maple Grove, Minn., Outstanding Undergraduate Student for the College of Nursing and Health Sciences; Cara M. Shimon, who graduated in December 2011, Emerald, Outstanding Undergraduate Student for the College of Business; Heather J. Bauer, Rochester, Minn., Outstanding Graduate Student for the College of Nursing and Health Sciences; Abigale L. Vercauteren, Suamico, Outstanding Graduate Student for the College of Arts and Sciences; Dana B. Kuehn, Woodbury, Minn., Outstanding Graduate Student for the College of Education and Human Sciences; and Tuan Anh Nguyen, Marshfield, Outstanding Graduate Student for the College of Business.

Alpha Phi Omega received the Student Organization Award and the RECing Crew received the New Student Organization Award. Maigan Wipfli, student programs coordinator for Housing and Residence Life and adviser to the National Residence Hall Honorary organization, received the Student Organization Advisor Award.
