Tip Sheet week of Spring Break, March 18-22

March 14, 2013

Many UW-Eau Claire faculty, staff and students will spend their spring breaks engaged in service, research and other meaningful activities throughout the United States and the world. The following are a few examples of their diverse activities:

Dr. Jessica Miller (foreign languages, French) and Dr. Doug Faulkner (geography and anthropology) and 10 students will travel to Louisiana as part of the spring semester interdisciplinary course "Cajun Watershed and Intercultural Immersion." The students are learning about the Cajun history, language and culture, as well as the geographical features and environmental issues related to water in the Cajun area. They will make connections between the culture, history and geography of Wisconsin and those of Cajun Louisiana. Contact: Dr. Miller at or Dr. Faulkner at

Dr. Rita Sperstad (nursing) and junior nursing students will visit a birthing center on the Texas-Mexico border. Dr. Sperstad started the program approximately 14 years ago. Dr. Jill Hecker-Fernandez (nursing) also now works with Sperstad on the program, which runs each year during spring break and Winterim. Contact: Dr. Sperstad at

Nursing students will travel to the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota. Dr. Debra Barker, director of UW-Eau Claire's American Indian Studies program, works with nursing faculty on the Rosebud project as she is originally from there and still has family there. Contact: Diane Marcyjanik at

Fifteen students from the College of Education and Human Sciences will participate in the Lac Courte Oreille Spring Break Immersion Trip, which will take them to the Lac Courte Oreille Reservation near Hayward. Students enrolled in an interdisciplinary course titled "Engaging Religious Pluralism & Urban Service" will travel to Chicago and Philadelphia. Students in the course meet weekly on Fridays during the spring semester. Contact: Stephen Spina (philosophy and religious studies) at

Communication and journalism students in an advanced journalism class will join the "Race, Class and Gender on the Civil Rights Trail" project during spring break. Contact: Dr. Jan Larson (communication and journalism) at

Students studying for careers in music performance will participate in a project called "Understanding the Intercultural Experiences of an Aspiring Artist: Exploring the Transition from the 'Big City' of Eau Claire to The Big Apple."
