EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire music and theatre arts department will present a guest artist recital featuring bassoonist Benjamin Coelho at 7:30 p.m. March 26 in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center.

Coelho, professor of bassoon at the University of Iowa, will perform a variety of works which showcase the bassoon as an instrument capable of virtuosity with a versatile ability to explore a large palette of musical colors.

The program will open with "Sarabande et Cortège" by Dutilleux; and Mozart's Sonata for Two Bassoons, featuring Coelho and Dr. Jacqueline Wilson, bassoonist and UW-Eau Claire lecturer of music, who previously was Coelho's teaching assistant at the University of Iowa.

Coelho also will perform "Drei Romanzen," Op. 94, by Schumann and three of the 16 Waltzes for Solo Bassoon by Mignone. The program will close with Sonata in F Major by William Hurlstone, which is considered one of the most important works for solo bassoon from the Romantic period.

Coelho, a native of Tatuí, Brazil, has appeared as soloist, chamber musician, orchestral musician, teacher and clinician throughout the world. He has released six critically acclaimed CDs, garnering praise from numerous national and international publications.

Coelho holds a bachelor's degree from Purchase College Conservatory of Music and a master's degree from the Manhattan School of Music.

The guest artist recital is free and open to the public. For more information about UW-Eau Claire music events, visit the music events calendar.
