EAU CLAIRE — University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire graduate Abigale Vercauteren, originally from Green Bay, will be returning to campus to give a presentation on her award-winning thesis at 1 p.m. April 25 in the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, located in Old Library Room 1142.

Vercauteren is currently pursuing a doctorate in the women and gender studies program at Arizona State University.

During her presentation, she will explain her winning thesis, "Beyond the Binary: Azar Nafisi's 'Reading Lolita in Tehran' as a Product of 'Hybridity.'" Discussion and refreshments will follow. All UW-Eau Claire students, faculty and staff are welcome to attend.

As April is Honor's Month, "this is the perfect time to showcase the exceptional work being done by our talented graduate students," said Nancy Amdahl, dean assistant in the Office of Graduate Studies.

In November, Vercauteren was recognized with first-place honors in UW-Eau Claire's 2013 Distinguished Master's Thesis Competition. Dr. Cathy Rex, assistant professor of English and Vercauteren's thesis adviser, submitted the thesis.

"Abby's work in this thesis is theoretically sound, critically sharp and beautifully written," Rex said. "She has entered into a very polemical conversation about a controversial book and done so with much intellectual courage, insight and authority."

Vercauteren earned her bachelor's degree in political science and women's studies from UW-Eau Claire in 2009 and her master's degree in English literature and textual interpretation in 2012.

The presentation is sponsored by UW-Eau Claire's Graduate Council and Office of Graduate Studies.
