EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire music and theatre arts department will present a guest artist recital featuring renowned pianist Dr. Eugene Alcalay at 7:30 p.m. April 30 in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center.
Alcalay will perform a variety of works representing several major time periods: Baroque, Classical, Early Romantic, Late Romantic and 20th century.
A native of Bucharest, Romania, Alcalay began playing piano and composing at an early age. In 1984 Alcalay came under the tutelage of Leonard Bernstein, who affirmed his "outstanding talent as both a performer and composer." As a result, Alcalay became the first recipient of the Leonard Bernstein Scholarship for gifted young musicians at the Indiana University School of Music
Currently an associate professor of piano at UW-Platteville, Alcalay's performance career has taken him to three continents and such U.S. venues as Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall and Carnegie Hall's Isaac Stern Auditorium. He has spent summers at prestigious international music festivals, including Tanglewood, Taos, Kneisel Hall and Ravinia. In addition, Alcalay served as a piano and chamber music faculty member at the Sixth International Music Festival and School in Bogota, Colombia, a country which he revisited in 2003 as a Fulbright Scholar, and in 2004 as a Fulbright senior specialist/artist-in-residence.
In addition to return engagements in London, England, Alcalay's 2012-13 season includes appearances throughout the U.S. as well as in Windsor, England; Kristiansand, Norway; Tegucicalpa, Honduras; and the People's Republic of China.
Alcalay holds bachelor's degrees in both piano and composition from the Indiana University School of Music and master's and doctoral degrees in piano performance from The Juilliard School.
