Trombone Choir and BASSically BRASS to perform May 1

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin Eau Claire music and theatre arts department will present a performance by the Trombone Choir and BASSically BRASS at 7:30 p.m. May 1 in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center.

The concert will begin with the Trombone Choir, conducted by Dr. Phil Ostrander, associate professor of music. Brian Diller, associate lecturer of music, will conduct "Canzona" by W. Hartley, the opening piece, and the three movements of "Drei Equale" by Beethoven. Other featured pieces will include "Finlandia" by Sibelius, arranged by C. Small, and "Asterism" by J. Turrin.

Dr. Jerry Young, professor emeritus of music, will conduct BASSically BRASS. The group will perform "Toccata and Fugue in D minor" by Bach, arranged by R. Winston Morris, under the direction of junior Nathan Rakow, Sparta. Senior Zachary Tessling, Apple Valley, Minn., will conduct "Cycles of the Avatar" by B. McMillan. The evening will close with "Overture to 'The Impressario'" by W.A. Mozart, arranged by R. Knoener.

The UW-Eau Claire Trombone Choir consists of music majors, minors and students from other departments. The group rehearses weekly, tours annually and has performed at the 2005 International Trombone Festival in New York and the 2006 Minnesota Music Educators Association conference.

BASSically BRASS is a group of low brass players who are music majors, minors and other university students selected by audition. It offers students the opportunity to perform original and transcribed pieces for their instruments. The ensemble has earned an outstanding reputation for its virtuosity and musicianship and has performed at venues around the world. BASSically BRASS sponsors the annual low brass concert series, OctubaFest.
