SUBJECT: Dr. Susan Harrison retires after presiding over 70 commencement ceremonies
Dr. Susan M. Harrison will retire this spring as professor emerita of mathematics after 30 years of service to the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
With Saturday's two commencement ceremonies, Dr. Harrison will have presided as Marshal over a total of 70 commencement exercises during her years at UW-Eau Claire.
In 1997, Dr. Harrison was elected as Chair of the University Senate, an office she held with distinction for 15 years — a university record. The Chair of the University Senate presides over commencement ceremonies, which now take place in December and May. (An August ceremony has been discontinued.)
When Dr. Harrison came to UW-Eau Claire in 1983, she taught in the computer science department. When she began serving as Chair of the University Senate, 60 percent of her time was spent with Senate and 40 percent in computer science.
She later moved to the mathematics department, where she also taught and developed courses. Her most recent mathematics department accomplishment was developing the CARE (Confidence in Algebra can be Revived and Energized) Center to support students in developmental mathematics courses.
Dr. Harrison has received numerous awards, both local and national, associated with advising, reflecting the depth and passion that she brings to UW-Eau Claire students. She has represented UW-Eau Claire at many local, state, regional and national events.
