EAU CLAIRE — Dr. Joseph Abhold has been named dean of students at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire following a national search. His appointment is effective Sept. 1.

"I am extremely pleased that an individual of Joe's caliber is going to be serving in such an important role as the dean of students," said Dr. Beth Hellwig, UW-Eau Claire vice chancellor of student affairs. "I think the campus is going to benefit tremendously from his care and compassion for students and breadth of experience in higher education."

Most recently, Abhold served as director of the University Counseling Center at UW Oshkosh, leading and organizing the Employee Assistance Program, AODA programs, campus violence prevention programs and other campuswide prevention programs. He also served as the interim dean of students at UW Oshkosh from August 2010 to March 2011 and received the UW System Board of Regents Academic Staff Award for Excellence in 2011.

Abhold has a background in psychology and served as a staff psychologist and assistant director of clinical services at the Counseling and Psychological Services Center at Ball State University from 1993-99. He assisted in the supervision of full-time and student reception area staff and the coordination of clinical service provisions. He also coordinated center research and outcome evaluations, provided time-limited individual and group therapy, supervised master's and pre-doctoral level interns in APA accredited internship programs, and conducted campus and community education and prevention programs.

"I am looking forward to working with the great students, staff and faculty at UW-Eau Claire," Abhold said. "During my interview process, everyone was so positive and helpful. I think that optimistic attitude is extremely important in an educational setting where we know there are challenges, but we believe that almost anything can be achieved. Working together to improve the campus climate in a way that brings out the best in everyone is my passion."

Abhold had a connection to UW-Eau Claire prior to his appointment as the new dean of students.

"A couple of my nieces and nephews attended UW-Eau Claire and really loved their experience," Abhold said. "The vice chancellor for student affairs is a great advocate for students, and the university is in a time of change under new leadership. It will be an exciting time to become a member of the Blugold family."

Abhold received his bachelor's degree in psychology from UW Oshkosh and his master's and doctoral degrees in clinical psychology from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville.
