EAU CLAIRE — Dr. Robert Eierman, University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire professor of chemistry, has been selected as Faculty Fellow in the university's Office of Research and Sponsored Programs for the 2013-14 academic year.

In his role as ORSP Faculty Fellow, Eierman will focus on identifying, developing and communicating about models for robust, effective student research and creative activity mentoring programs. A UW-Eau Claire campus team recently conducted a faculty survey, results of which will assist with plans to develop models and resources for faculty research mentors. This work is an outgrowth of ongoing efforts to institutionalize undergraduate research across the UW System.

“Bob’s 30 years of experience at UW-Eau Claire spent teaching, mentoring student researchers, designing and evaluating curriculum, and developing a wide variety of professional development opportunities for educators will be an asset as ORSP explores expanded services and supports for faculty research mentors,” said Dr. Karen Havholm, assistant vice chancellor for research.

Faculty-mentored student research is an important and growing form of experiential learning, Havholm said. According to recent data, 37 percent of seniors participated in research through ORSP-sponsored activities, a research-intensive course, or both during their undergraduate experience at UW-Eau Claire.

“I believe that higher education is all about student learning, and I am committed to creating environments that enable all students to learn well,” Eierman said. "Collaboration in scholarship and creative work between faculty and students includes a wide spectrum of working relationships. Investigating best practices for mentoring will help enhance these experiences for undergraduates."

The ORSP Faculty Fellow program was started in 2007 to provide faculty with an opportunity to obtain different experiences and make new connections.

“These experiences influence the Fellow's teaching, research and scholarly activities, ultimately benefiting UW-Eau Claire students,” Havholm said. "ORSP also gains from the Fellow’s faculty perspective."
