UW-Eau Claire photographer's sports exhibit on display in Davies CenterSeptember 4, 2013
EAU CLAIRE — Rick Mickelson, a photographer and administrative program manager in Learning and Technology Services at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, currently has his photography exhibit, titled "Game Face: The Sports Photography of Rick Mickelson," displayed along the north side corridor outside the Ojibwe Ballroom of Davies Center. The exhibit, sponsored by University Centers, will be on display through Oct. 31.
On his first day of work at UW-Eau Claire in 1988, Mickelson photographed the Blugold football team battling UW-Stevens Point during the Homecoming football game. Through three athletic directors, five head football coaches, seven Chancellors, 26 Homecoming games, 44 national championships, 47 Blugold Hall of Famers, 95 conference championships, hundreds of student athletes and thousands of exposures, Mickelson continues to chronicle Blugold athletics.
The images chosen for "Game Face" cover the full spectrum of Blugold athletics. The chosen images look into the eyes of the athletes for emotion, intensity, effort, passion and fun.
"I have always viewed sport as an art form," Mickelson said. "Both art and sport deliberately arrange elements in a way that influences and affects senses, emotions and intellect. Both require skill and passion. Two of the most beautiful things I have ever seen are Michelangelo's "Pieta" and Gale Sayers running with a football. To me they are the same. During my career as a photographer at UW-Eau Claire, art and athletics have always been near the center of my universe. I hope this body of work shows that."
