EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will celebrate the inauguration of Chancellor James C. Schmidt at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8, in the Ojibwe Ballroom of the W.R. Davies Student Center.

Schmidt began serving as UW-Eau Claire's eighth chancellor on July 1. See the chancellor's website for Schmidt's biography and information about the university's previous chancellors.

The public is invited to attend the inauguration ceremony and reception to follow on the first floor of Davies Center. To ensure a parking space for the event, anyone wishing to attend is asked to register online at or by calling 715-836-5607.

"This will be a celebration of UW-Eau Claire and all this university means for our students, our alumni, our community, our state and our world," Schmidt said. "I am honored to lead UW-Eau Claire as it builds on and continues to redefine its longstanding tradition of excellence in preparing students for lifelong success as leaders and contributors in our interconnected world."

In addition to Schmidt's inauguration speech, the ceremony will include remarks from UW System President Kevin Reilly, who will present Schmidt with the university seal, and a keynote address by Darrell Krueger, retired president of Winona State University, who was a mentor to Schmidt. Schmidt was vice president for university advancement at Winona State and executive director of the WSU Foundation board of trustees prior to joining UW-Eau Claire.

More than 100 delegates will walk in the inaugural procession, including UW-Eau Claire faculty and representatives from other colleges and universities. Max Garland, a UW-Eau Claire English professor and Wisconsin's Poet Laureate, will read during the ceremony. The ceremony also will include performances by UW-Eau Claire student music ensembles, including the Piano Trio, Concert Choir, Wind Symphony, Trumpet Ensemble, Baroque Ensemble and Jazz Combo. The Blugold Marching Band will play just outside Davies Center to kick off the reception following the ceremony.
