EAU CLAIRE — After 30 years of dedicated service to the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, Dr. Susan Harrison, professor emerita of mathematics, received true Blugold status when she received the honorary alumna award from the UW-Eau Claire Alumni Association Nov. 15.

"It is such an honor and a blessing to feel all I have given and done over the years has been recognized," Harrison said. "I have spent half of my life here as part of this community and now I am officially a Blugold. It has been a fantastic experience."

Harrison began her career at UW-Eau Claire in 1983 teaching in the computer science department. In 1997 she was elected as chair of the University Senate, an office she held with distinction for 15 years, a university record. Harrison presided over 70 commencement ceremonies during her time as Senate chair. She later moved to the mathematics department, where she taught and developed courses and programs including the CARE (Confidence in Algebra can be Revived and Energized) Center to support students in developmental mathematics courses.

John Bachmeier, director of Alumni Relations, said Harrison's longtime service to the students, faculty and staff at UW-Eau Claire has been "exemplary."

"Susan may not have graduated from UW-Eau Claire, but she surely epitomizes what a Blugold is," Bachmeier said. "She is blue and gold through and through. Her dedication to this university is incredible."

Harrison said what she enjoyed most about her time at UW-Eau Claire was getting to know the people who all work together to make a difference for students.

"I loved the relationships and connections I have made throughout my work in various departments at UW-Eau Claire," Harrison said. "Serving as chair of the University Senate gave me the opportunity to meet faculty and staff from all areas of the university. We are a family here and I was happy to be able to serve as a mentor for new faculty members by using my knowledge and experiences to help them make connections and establish networks on campus."
