Media Memo: UW-Eau Claire among top 10 most efficient DIII public athletics programs

December 6, 2013

TO: News Editors and Directors

FROM: Julie Poquette, News Bureau director

DATE: Dec. 6, 2013

SUBJECT: UW-Eau Claire among top 10 most efficient DIII public athletics programs

UW-Eau Claire's athletics program is among the top 10 public university athletics programs in the nation when it comes to operational efficiencies that result in points toward a program's finish in the Learfield Director's Cup competition of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics. A high Director's Cup standing is considered a mark of success for a college athletics program.

The top 10 most efficient NCAA Division III public and private athletics programs were identified in a study by Russ Kashian, a UW-Whitewater professor of economics. The study, announced Dec. 5, used data from 2007-2012 and looked at recruiting expenses per student, operating expenses for athletic programs, number of men's and women's sports participants, size of school, number of coaches per athletic sport, and whether a school is public or private. See related UW-Whitewater news release.

In the 2012-13 Learfield Director's Cup competition, UW-Eau Claire finished 14th out of more than 430 institutions in NCAA Division III. UW-Eau Claire has finished 18th or better in the competition for the past seven years. A complete point and finish history can be found on the Blugold athletics website. Combined with their athletic success, UW-Eau Claire student-athletes also achieved a 3.124 combined grade-point average during the 2012-13 season. It was the 12th year in a row that Blugold student-athletes achieved a combined grade-point average of 3.0 or better.

Scott Kilgallon, UW-Eau Claire director of athletics, is available to talk to reporters about the university athletics program's successes, including those that result in high Director's Cup finishes. Kilgallon can be reached at 715-836-5858 or kilgals@uwec.edu.
