Area high school students compete in annual math meet at UW-Eau Claire

EAU CLAIRE — Thirty-seven teams representing 15 area high schools participated in the 32nd annual Mathematics Meet Feb. 22 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

Dr. Carolyn Otto, assistant professor of mathematics, and Dr. Alex Smith, professor and chair of the mathematics department, welcomed students and their sponsors from the following high schools: Aquinas (La Crosse), Augusta, Black River Falls, Bruce, Chippewa Falls, Ellsworth, Gilmanton, McDonell (Chippewa Falls), Memorial (Eau Claire), Mondovi, North (Eau Claire), Regis (Eau Claire), Stanley-Boyd, Viroqua and West Salem.

The Memorial, Eau Claire team, Pi-Thons, took first place in the large school division, AAA. The team, sponsored by Mark Slepica, consisted of Lucy Wang, Diane Hu, Joshua Gilberstadt, Pitchaya and Veeraya Tanawattancharoen, and William Jang.

The Chippewa Falls team, Fabulous Musical AlgeBros, took second place in the large school division, AAA. Mike Nerbovig was the team sponsor. Team members were Brian Crocker, David Arneberg, Joseph Krause, Allsion Prill, Eric Anderilk and Daniel Hinke.

The West Salem team, Panther Powers, took first place in the medium school division, AA. The team, sponsored by LeRoy Krall, was composed of members Brandon Schran, Mariah Arneson, Roman Schlimgen, Christian Schran and Michael Uebele.

The Aquinas, La Crosse team, Sweet Asymptotes, took second place in the medium school division, AA. Jason Weber was the team sponsor. Team members were Ben DeGroot, Matt Nelson, Avery McLain, Grace Riley, Tom Gundersen and Jim Meyers.

The Regis, Eau Claire team, Binary High Fives, took first place in the small school division, A. The team, sponsored by Sue Garcia, consisted of members Mingjia Chen, Yiduo Cui, Gabby Brucker, Sean Jordan, Kristin Mathiowetz and Sam Byrne.

The McDonell, Chippewa Falls team, Mackmaticians II, took second place in the small school division, A. Tony Reiter was the team's sponsor. Team members were Stephen Ortmann, Peter Breuer, Robert Ochs, Nick Zander, Tessa McChesney and Jian Teng.

First place individual awardees were: Class AAA — a tie between Jeremiah Buenger, North,Eau Claire; and Ken Tanawattanacharoen, Memorial, Eau Claire; Class AA — Michael Uebele, West Salem; and Class A — Mingjia Chen, Regis,Eau Claire. These students will receive a four-credit hour scholarship to UW-Eau Claire.

Second place individual awardees were: Class AA — Christian Schran, West Salem; and Class A — Sam Byrne, Regis, Eau Claire. These students will receive a three-credit hour scholarship to UW-Eau Claire.

Third place individual awardees were: Class AAA — Joshua Gilberstadt, Memorial, Eau Claire; Class AA — Ashley Huppert, Ellsworth; and Class A — Kristin Mathiowetz, Regis, Eau Claire. These students will receive a two-credit hour scholarship to UW-Eau Claire.

Fourth place individual awardees were: Class AAA — a tie between Joseph Krause, Chippewa Falls; and J.P. Nelson, Memorial, Eau Claire; Class AA — Dan Giese, Ellsworth; and Class A — Peter Breuer, McDonell,Chippewa Falls. These students will receive a one-credit hour scholarship to UW-Eau Claire.

Fifth place individual winners were: Class AA — a tie between Jim Meyers, Aquinas, La Crosse and Brandon Schran, West Salem; and Class A — Ryan Sokup, Regis, Eau Claire.

Sixth place individual winners were: Class AAA — a five-way tie between Madison Schaefer, North,Eau Claire; and Lucy Wang, Adam Nijhawan, Kate Lauer and Diane Hu, Memorial, Eau Claire; and Class A — a tie between Jian Teng, McDonell,Chippewa Falls; and Austin Abts, Regis, Eau Claire.

Scholarships, valued at more than $333 per credit, are funded by a grant from Xcel Energy to the UW-Eau Claire department of mathematics.
