Readers sought for International Poetry Reading

March 7, 2014

                                          2013 International Poetry Reading

EAU CLAIRE — University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire faculty, staff, students and community members are invited to serve as readers for the university's eighth annual International Poetry Reading. The event will be held from 7-9 p.m. April 2 in the Ojibwe Grand Ballroom of Davies Center at UW-Eau Claire.

During the event — which aims to celebrate the sounds of the world — students, community members, faculty and staff come together to read and listen to poetry written in languages other than modern, standard English. Last year, poems were read in 42 different languages.

Co-organizers of the event Dr. Audrey Fessler, associate professor of English and women's studies, and Dr. Jeff Vahlbusch, University Honors Program director and associate professor of languages, said the program will delight everyone who enjoys the beauty and emotional power of language and everyone who appreciates cultural diversity.

This year's event also will be live-streamed for those who wish to experience the event but cannot attend in person.

Guidelines to participate are as follows:

  • Send an email message as soon as possible to Fessler at with "Poetry Reading" in the subject line to get on the list of readers. Include your choice of language, along with your name and email address.
  • Select a short poem (40 lines or fewer) in that language suitable for a general audience, including children.
  • By midnight March 19 at the latest, send Fessler an electronic copy of the poem in its original language and in translation into modern, standard English. The poem and translation will be published in a booklet to be distributed at the event.
  • Come to the event and read the poem you've chosen in its original language.

To feature as many different languages as possible, it may be necessary to limit the number of readers in a single language, so those interested in reading are encouraged to volunteer as soon as possible.

The International Poetry Reading is hosted by UW-Eau Claire's English Festival, with support from the UW-Eau Claire Foundation and the university's Center for International Education and English and languages departments.
